Reconnecting with Yourself Through a Gentle, Body-Based Approach

Trauma can affect the way we experience our bodies, emotions, relationships, and sense of safety in the world. For many people, talking about their experiences is an important part of healing, but sometimes words alone don't fully address what trauma has left behind.

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is a gentle, evidence-based approach designed to help individuals reconnect with their bodies, increase awareness, and rebuild a sense of choice and empowerment.

Unlike traditional yoga classes, TCTSY is not focused on achieving poses, flexibility, fitness, or relaxation. Instead, it offers opportunities to notice sensations, practice choice-making, and explore movement in a way that supports healing from trauma.

What Is TCTSY?

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is the first and only yoga-based intervention that has been empirically validated for the treatment of complex trauma and chronic PTSD.

Developed at the Trauma Center in Boston, TCTSY is grounded in an understanding of how trauma affects both the brain and body. The practice focuses on helping participants develop a greater sense of connection to their present-moment experience through simple movements and invitations.

There is no pressure to perform, share personal experiences, or do anything that doesn't feel right for you.

How TCTSY Is Different from a Yoga Class

TCTSY is not a traditional yoga class.

In a TCTSY session:

  • There are no hands-on adjustments

  • There is no expectation to perform poses in a certain way

  • Choice and agency are emphasized throughout the practice

  • Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace

  • The focus is on internal experience rather than external appearance

  • There is no pressure to share or discuss personal experiences

The goal is not to "do yoga right." The goal is to create opportunities to notice what is happening in your body and make choices based on your own experience.

How TCTSY Can Help

Many individuals find that TCTSY helps them:

  • Reconnect with their bodies

  • Increase awareness of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations

  • Strengthen their sense of choice and agency

  • Improve self-trust

  • Develop greater emotional regulation

  • Feel more grounded and present

  • Build a stronger sense of safety within themselves

Healing often begins by learning to reconnect with yourself in small, manageable ways.
